Commutative Algebra, chapter III, § 2. General results on filtered rings and modules

Let A be a filtered ring, E a filtered A-module and (En)(E_n) filtration of E; suppose that E0=EE_0 = E, that the EnE_n are submodules of E, that the A-modules E/EnE/E_n are Artinian and finally that the topological group E is Hausdorff and complete. Then the intersection of a decreasing sequence of non-empty closed affine subsets of E is non-empty.

We have seen in no. 6 that, since E is Hausdorff and complete, it is identified with E~=lim⁡←E/En\tilde{E} = \lim_{\leftarrow} E/E_n. Let (Wp)(W_p) be a decreasing sequence of non-empty closed affine subsets of E and, for all n≥0n \geq 0, let Wp,nW_{p,n} be the canonical image of WpW_p in E/EnE/E_n; we are going to construct a sequence x=(xn)∈E~x = (x_n) \in \tilde{E} such that xn∈Wp,nx_n \in W_{p,n} for all pp and all nn; hence x∈Wp+Enx \in W_p + E_n for all pp and all nn and, as the WpW_p are closed, x∈Wpx \in W_p for all pp (no. 5), which will prove the proposition.

As E/E0=0E/E_0 = 0, we shall take x0=0x_0 = 0. Suppose that the xix_i are defined for 0≤i≤n−10 \leq i \leq n - 1 and let Wp,n′W'_{p,n} be the set of elements of Wp,nW_{p,n} whose canonical image in E/En−1E/E_{n-1} is xn−1x_{n-1}; as xn−1∈Wp,n−1x_{n-1} \in W_{p,n-1} and Wp,n−1W_{p,n-1} is the canonical image of Wp,nW_{p,n}, Wp,n′W'_{p,n} is non-empty and is obviously an affine subset of E/EnE/E_n; moreover the sequence (Wp,n′)p∈N(W'_{p,n})_{p \in \mathbf{N}} is decreasing. As E/EnE/E_n is Artinian, this sequence is stationary (otherwise the sequence of submodules of E/EnE/E_n which are the directions of the Wp,n′W'_{p,n} would be strictly decreasing, which is absurd). It is sufficient then to take xnx_n to be an element of ⋂p∈NWp,n′\bigcap_{p \in \mathbf{N}} W'_{p,n} and the construction of (xn)(x_n) can then be performed by induction.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
