Algebra, chapter I, § 4. Groups and groups with operators

Let GG be a group with operators and AA and BB two stable subgroups of GG. Suppose that the relations a∈Aa\in A and b∈Bb\in B imply aba−1∈B∗aba^{-1}\in B^{*} (in other words, AA normalizes BB)∗^{*}. Then AB=BAAB=BA is a stable subgroup of GG, A∩BA\cap B is a normal stable subgroup of AA and BB is a normal stable subgroup of ABAB. The canonical injection of AA into ABAB defines on passing to the quotient an isomorphism of A/(A∩B)A/(A\cap B) onto AB/BAB/B.

The formulae

(ab)(a′b′)=aa′(a′−1ba′⋅b′) (ab)(a'b')=aa'({a'}^{-1}ba'\cdot b')
(ab)−1=a−1(ab−1a−1) (ab)^{-1}=a^{-1}(ab^{-1}a^{-1})
(ab)α=aαbα (ab)^\alpha=a^\alpha b^\alpha

for a,a′∈Aa,a'\in A, b,b′∈Bb,b'\in B and every operator α\alpha on GG, show that ABAB is a stable subgroup of GG. Let a∈Aa\in A and x∈A∩Bx\in A\cap B; then axa−1∈Baxa^{-1}\in B by the hypotheses made on AA and BB and clearly axa−1axa^{-1} belongs to AA, hence A∩BA\cap B is normal in AA. Let a∈Aa\in A and b,b′b,b' be in BB; the formula (ab)b′(ab)−1=a(bb′b−1)a−1(ab)b'(ab)^{-1}=a(bb'b^{-1})a^{-1} shows that BB is normal in ABAB. Let ϕ\phi be the restriction to AA of the canonical homomorphism of AB onto AB/B; then ϕ(a)=aB\phi(a) = aB and hence the kernel of ϕ\phi is equal to A∩BA \cap B. Clearly ϕ\phi is surjective and hence defines an isomorphism of A/(A∩B)A/(A \cap B) onto AB/BAB/B.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
