Algebra, chapter I, § 10. Inverse and direct limits

A direct system of magmas relative to the indexing set I is a direct system of sets (Eα,fβα)(E_\alpha, f_{\beta\alpha}) relative to I, each EαE_\alpha having a magma structure and each fβαf_{\beta\alpha} being a magma homomorphism.

Let (Eα,fβα)(E_\alpha, f_{\beta\alpha}) be a direct system of magmas. E will denote the direct limit set lim⁡⟶Eα\lim_{\longrightarrow} E_\alpha and fαf_\alpha the canonical mapping of EαE_\alpha into E. Recall that

(2)

fβ∘fβα=fαfor α≤β, f_\beta \circ f_{\beta\alpha} = f_\alpha \quad \text{for } \alpha \leq \beta,

(3)

E=⋃α∈Ifα(Eα). E = \bigcup_{\alpha \in I} f_\alpha(E_\alpha).

By (2), also

(4)

fα(Eα)⊂fβ(Eβ)for α≤β. f_\alpha(E_\alpha) \subset f_\beta(E_\beta) \quad \text{for } \alpha \leq \beta.

If xα,yα∈Eαx_\alpha, y_\alpha \in E_\alpha are such that fα(xα)=fα(yα)f_\alpha(x_\alpha) = f_\alpha(y_\alpha), there exists a β≥α\beta \geq \alpha such that fβα(xα)=fβα(yα)f_{\beta\alpha}(x_\alpha) = f_{\beta\alpha}(y_\alpha).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
