Algebra, chapter II, § 1. Modules

The submodule generated by a family (ai)i∈I(a_i)_{i \in I} of elements of an AA*-module* EE is the set of linear combinations of the family (ai)(a_i).

Every submodule of EE which contains all the aia_i also contains the linear combinations of the aia_i. Conversely, formulae (1) and (2) of no. 1 prove that the set of linear combinations of the aia_i is a submodule of EE which obviously contains all the aia_i and is therefore the smallest submodule containing them.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
