Algebra, chapter II, § 1. Modules

An A-module EE is said to be the direct sum of a family (Mι)ι∈I(M_\iota)_{\iota \in I} of submodules of EE if the canonical mapping ⨁ι∈IMι→E\bigoplus_{\iota \in I} M_\iota \to E (no. 6) is an isomorphism.

It amounts to the same to say that every x∈Ex \in E can be written in a unique way in the form x=∑ι∈Ixιx = \sum_{\iota \in I} x_\iota, where xι∈Eιx_\iota \in E_\iota for all ι∈I\iota \in I; the element xιx_\iota thus corresponding to xx is called the component of xx in EιE_\iota; the mapping x↦xιx \mapsto x_\iota is linear.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
