Algebra, chapter II, § 10. Matrices

For two matrices over a field, of type (m,n)(m, n), to be equivalent, it is necessary and sufficient that they have the same rank.

We shall now recover Proposition 13 by another more explicit method. For every ring AA, every λ∈A\lambda \in A, every integer m>1m > 1 and every ordered pair of distinct integers i,ji, j in [1,m][1, m], we write

Bij(λ)=Im+λEij B_{ij}(\lambda) = I_m + \lambda E_{ij}

an invertible matrix of order mm by no. 8.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
