Algebra, chapter II, § 10. Matrices

(1) In Chapter III, we shall see that, if m=n=rm = n = r and KK is commutative, then, for all choices of PP and QQ satisfying the conditions of Proposition 14, the element δr\delta_r is always the same and equal to the determinant of XX (III, § 8, no. 6).

(2) The argument of Proposition 14, slightly modified, shows that there is a permutation matrix RR such that (with the same conditions on PP)

PXR=(IrN00) PX R = \begin{pmatrix} I_r & N \\ 0 & 0 \end{pmatrix}

if m=n=rm = n = r does not hold, and

PXR=diag⁡(1,…,1,δ) PX R = \operatorname{diag}(1, \ldots, 1, \delta)

otherwise. Observe also that the method of proof gives an explicit determination of the matrices P,Q,RP, Q, R when XX is given explicitly.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
