Algebra, chapter IV, § 2. Zeros of polynomials

— Let KK be a commutative field, α1,α2,…,a,\alpha_1, \alpha_2, \ldots, a, distinct elements of KK and β1,β2,…,βn\beta_1, \beta_2, \ldots, \beta_n any elements of KK. For i=1,2,…,ni = 1, 2, \ldots, n we put

fi(X)=∏j∈U(i)(X−αj)/(αi−αj), f_i(X) = \prod_{j \in U(i)} (X - \alpha_j)/(\alpha_i - \alpha_j),

where U(i)U(i) is the set of integers jj such that j≠ij \neq i and 1≤j≤n1 \leq j \leq n. Then β1f1+…+βnfn\beta_1 f_1 + \ldots + \beta_n f_n is the unique element ff of K[X]K[X] such that deg⁡f<n\deg f < n and f(αi)=βif(\alpha_i) = \beta_i for 1≤i≤n1 \leq i \leq n.

The uniqueness off follows from the Cor. to Th. 1. Let f=β1f1+…+βnfnf = \beta_1 f_1 + \ldots + \beta_n f_n, then since fif_i has degree n−1n - 1, we have deg⁡f<n\deg f < n. On the other hand, fi(αj)=0f_i(\alpha_j) = 0 for j≠ij \neq i and fi(αi)=1f_i(\alpha_i) = 1, hence f(αi)=βif(\alpha_i) = \beta_i for 1≤i≤n1 \leq i \leq n.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
