Algebra, VII, p. 13, § 2. Torsion modules over a principal ideal domain

Let p>2p > 2 be a prime number and let xx be an integer congruent to 1 mod pp and not congruent to 1 mod p2p^2; there is an exact sequence

{0}→Z/pn 1Z→u(Z/pnZ)∗→ν(Z/pZ)∗→{1} \{0\} \to \mathbf{Z}/p^n \ ^1\mathbf{Z} \xrightarrow{u} (\mathbf{Z}/p^n\mathbf{Z})^* \xrightarrow{\nu} (\mathbf{Z}/p\mathbf{Z})^* \to \{1\}

of groups, where vv is the natural projection and where uu is induced on the quotients by the map r↦xrr \mapsto x^r. Let Zp\mathbf{Z}_p be the ring of pp-adic integers (VV, p. 96), and let xx be an element of Zp\mathbf{Z}_p such that x−1∈pZpx - 1 \in p\mathbf{Z}_p and x−1∉p2Zpx - 1 \notin p^2\mathbf{Z}_p; on passing to inverse limits, the exact sequences (5) induce an exact sequence

{0}→Zp→uZp∗→v(Z/pZ)∗→{1} \{0\} \to \mathbf{Z}_p \xrightarrow{u} \mathbf{Z}_p^* \xrightarrow{v} (\mathbf{Z}/p\mathbf{Z})^* \to \{1\}

where vv is the natural map, and the continuous map uu extends the map n↦xnn \mapsto x^n (n∈Zn \in \mathbf{Z}). We often put xn=u(x)x^n = u(x) for n∈Zpn \in \mathbf{Z}_p.

Similarly, if x∈Z2x \in \mathbf{Z}_2 with x−1∈4Zx - 1 \in 4\mathbf{Z}, and x−1∉8Z2x - 1 \notin 8\mathbf{Z}_2, then there is a split exact sequence

{0}→Z2→uZ2∗→v(Z/4Z)∗→{1}. \{0\} \to \mathbf{Z}_2 \xrightarrow{u} \mathbf{Z}_2^* \xrightarrow{v} (\mathbf{Z}/4\mathbf{Z})^* \to \{1\}.

where uu is a continuous extension of the map n↦xnn \mapsto x^n

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
