Algebra, VII, p. 17, § 4. Finitely generated modules over a principal ideal domain

Let LL be a free module over a principal ideal domain AA and let xx be an element of LL. Then the following conditions are equivalent:

(i) xx is indivisible ; (ii) *there exists a linear form ff on LL such that f(x)=1f(x) = 1 ; (iii) xx is nonzero and the submodule AxAx is a direct factor of LL ; (iv) xx is an element of some basis of LL.

(i) ⇒\Rightarrow (ii) : this follows from the definition. (ii) ⇒\Rightarrow (iii) : let ff be a linear form on LL such that f(x)=1f(x) = 1 ; then x≠0x \neq 0 and the map y↦f(y)xy \mapsto f(y)x is a projector of LL, with image AxAx. (iii) ⇒\Rightarrow (iv) : let L′L' be a complement of AxAx in LL, and let B′B' be a basis of L′L' (VII, p. 15, Cor. 2) ; then B′∪{x}B' \cup \{x\} is a basis of LL. (iv) ⇒\Rightarrow (i) : trivial.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
