Algebra, chapter VII, § 4. Finitely generated modules over a principal ideal domain

— 1) If xx is a nonzero element of LL and cc a content of xx, then there exists a unique element yy of LL such that x=cyx = cy ; denote this element x/cx/c ; then x/cx/c is an indivisible element of LL. 2) The content cL(x)c_L(x) is the annihilator of the torsion module of L/AxL/Ax.

Let LL be a free module over a principal ideal domain AA and let MM be a submodule of LL ; by VII, p. 4, Lemma 1, the family cL(x),x∈Mc_L(x), x \in M, has a maximal element ; if M≠{0}M \neq \{0\} then such a maximal element is nonzero.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
