Algebra, chapter VII, § 4. Finitely generated modules over a principal ideal domain

— A submodule MM of finite rank in a free module LL over a principal ideal domain AA has a complement in LL if and only if L/ML/M is torsion free.

In the notation of Th. 1, if L/ML/M is torsion free, then M=M′M = M', and M′M' has a complement L′L' in LL. Conversely if MM has a complement L′L' in LL, then L/ML/M is isomorphic to L′L', which is free (VII, p. 15, Cor. 2), and a fortiori torsion free.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
