Algebra, chapter VII, § 4. Finitely generated modules over a principal ideal domain

— In the notation and hypotheses of Th. 1, the ideals AαiA\alpha_i of AA are called the invariant factors of the submodule MM with respect to the module LL.

In the case where AA is either the ring Z\mathbf{Z} of rational integers or the polynomial ring K[X]K[X] in one indeterminate over a field KK, there is a canonical way of choosing a generator for each ideal of AA: a positive integer in the case of Z\mathbf{Z}, or a monic polynomial in the case of K[X]K[X] (VII, p. 5). In each of these cases, the canonical generator of the invariant factor AaiAa_i is also called an invariant factor of MM with respect to LL, by abuse of language.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
