Algebra, chapter VII, § 4. Finitely generated modules over a principal ideal domain

— Every finitely generated module E over a principal ideal domain is the direct sum of the torsion submodule of E and a free module.

The torsion submodule of E has in general several distinct complements. For example, if E=Z×(Z/(2))E = \mathbf{Z} \times (\mathbf{Z}/(2)) then the torsion submodule of E is {0}×(Z/(2))\{0\} \times (\mathbf{Z}/(2)); it has as a complement the submodule Z×(0)\mathbf{Z} \times (0), and also the submodule consisting of all elements (n,n‾)(n, \overline{n}), where nn runs through Z\mathbf{Z} and n‾\overline{n} is the residue class of nn mod 2.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
