Algebra, chapter VII, § 5. Endomorphisms of vector spaces

Let EE be a finite dimensional vector space over a commutative field KK, and let uu be an endomorphism of EE. Then the following conditions are equivalent:

(i) the eigenvalues of uu (in some algebraically closed extension of KK) belong to KK;

(ii) there exists a basis of EE with respect to which the matrix of uu is lower (resp. upper) triangular;

(iii) there exists a basis of EE with respect to which the matrix of uu is a diagonal block of Jordan matrices.

We have (i) ⇒\Rightarrow (iii) by Prop. 7 and the above remarks, and the assertions (iii) ⇒\Rightarrow (ii) and (ii) ⇒\Rightarrow (i) are trivial.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
