Algebra, chapter VII, § 5. Endomorphisms of vector spaces

If B and C are lower triangular matrices of order n with diagonals (βi)(\beta_i) and (γi)(\gamma_i), then the matrices B+CB + C and BCBC are lower triangular with diagonals (βi+γi)(\beta_i + \gamma_i) and (βiγi)(\beta_i \gamma_i).

Since the matrix UU of uu is lower triangular with diagonal (αi)(\alpha_i) say, it follows from Lemma 1 that q(U)q(U) is a lower triangular matrix with diagonal (q(αi))(q(\alpha_i)). Then X.I,−q(U)X . I, -q(U) is a lower triangular matrix with diagonal (X−q(a;))(X - q(a;)), which proves (6).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
