Algebra, chapter VII, § 5. Endomorphisms of vector spaces

— Suppose the field K is of characteristic zero; then the endomorphism u is nilpotent if and only if Tr⁡(us)=0\operatorname{Tr}(u^s) = 0 for 1≤s≤n1 \leq s \leq n.

If uu is nilpotent then the aia_i are all zero, and Tr⁡(us)=0\operatorname{Tr}(u^s) = 0 for all s>0s > 0 (Cor. 3). Conversely, if Tr⁡(us)=0\operatorname{Tr}(u^s) = 0 for 1≤s≤n1 \leq s \leq n, then the aia_i are all zero since KK is of characteristic zero (IV, p. 72, Cor.), and uu is nilpotent (VII, p. 33).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
