Algebra, chapter VII, § 5. Endomorphisms of vector spaces

— Let EE be a finite dimensional vector space over a commutative field, and let ff be an endomorphism of EE. Then the following conditions are equivalent: (i) ff has a Jordan decomposition and is an automorphism ; (ii) ff has a Jordan decomposition and fsf_s is an automorphism ; (iii) there exists an absolutely semi-simple automorphism aa of EE and a unipotent endomorphism uu of EE such that f=ua=auf = ua = au. Moreover, under these conditions, in the notation of (iii), we must have a=fsa = f_s and u=1+fs−1fnu = 1 + f_s^{-1}f_n. (i) ⇒\Rightarrow (ii): this follows from Remark 1. (ii) ⇒\Rightarrow (iii): take a=fsa = f_s and u=1+fs−1fnu = 1 + f_s^{-1}f_n; then f=ua=auf = ua = au, while aa is an absolutely semi-simple automorphism, and uu is unipotent. (iii) ⇒\Rightarrow (i): in the notation of (iii), take n=a(u−1)=(u−1)an = a(u - 1) = (u - 1)a. Then an=naan = na and f=a+nf = a + n, and nn is nilpotent. It follows that (a,n)(a, n) is the Jordan decomposition of ff. This implies (i) as well as the relations a=fsa = f_s and u=1+fs−1fnu = 1 + f_s^{-1}f_n.

Put fr=fs−1f=ffs−1=1+fs−1fnf_r = f_s^{-1}f = ff_s^{-1} = 1 + f_s^{-1}f_n, and call this the unipotent component of ff. The pair (fs,fr)(f_s, f_r) is often called the multiplicative Jordan decomposition of the automorphism ff.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
