Integration, chapter IV, § 7. Barycenters

For every point x∈Xx \in X, the following properties are equivalent:

a) xx is H\mathscr{H}*-extremal*.

b) For every open neighborhood UU of xx in XX and every ε>0\varepsilon > 0, there exists a function h≥0h \geq 0 in H\mathscr{H} such that h(x)≤εh(x) \leq \varepsilon and h(y)≥1h(y) \geq 1 for every y∈X−Uy \in X - U.

Let xx be any point of XX, ff a function in C(X;R)\mathscr{C}(X; \mathbf{R}); it is known (TVS, II, §3, No. 1, Prop. 1) that the infimum of the numbers λ(f)\lambda(f), for all the positive measures on XX such that λ(h)=h(x)\lambda(h) = h(x) for every function h∈Hh \in \mathscr{H}, is equal to the supremum of the numbers h(x)h(x), where hh runs over the set of functions h∈Hh \in \mathscr{H} such that h≤fh \leq f. Suppose that xx is H\mathscr{H}-extremal; it then follows from Prop. 4, (ii) that for every function f∈C(X;R)f \in \mathscr{C}(X; \mathbf{R}),

f(x)=sup⁡h∈H,h≤fh(x). f(x) = \sup_{h \in \mathscr{H}, h \leq f} h(x).

To show that a) implies b), we take for ff a continuous mapping of XX into [0,1][0, 1], with support contained in UU, such that f(x)=1f(x) = 1; then, by (11), there exists a function h′∈Hh' \in \mathscr{H} such that h′≤fh' \leq f and h′(x)≥1−εh'(x) \geq 1 - \varepsilon. Since 1∈H1 \in \mathscr{H}, the function h=1−h′h = 1 - h' meets the conditions of b).

Conversely, suppose that the condition b) is verified; this condition implies that 1−h≤φU1 - h \leq \varphi_U; for every positive measure λ\lambda on XX satisfying the condition (10), we therefore have

λ(U)=λ(φU)≥λ(1−h)=1−h(x)≥1−ε. \lambda(U) = \lambda(\varphi_U) \geq \lambda(1 - h) = 1 - h(x) \geq 1 - \varepsilon.

Since, by hypothesis, this relation holds for every ε>0\varepsilon > 0 and every open neighborhood UU of xx, it follows that

λ({x})=inf⁡Uλ(U)≥1−ε \lambda(\{x\}) = \inf_U \lambda(U) \geq 1 - \varepsilon

for every ε>0\varepsilon > 0, therefore λ({x})=1\lambda(\{x\}) = 1. Since λ\lambda is positive and of total mass 1, necessarily λ=εx\lambda = \varepsilon_x, which proves that xx is H\mathscr{H}-extremal, by virtue of Prop. 4, (ii).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
