Integration, chapter VI, § 1. Integration of vector-valued functions
Let be two locally convex spaces, a mapping of a locally compact space into . The following conditions are equivalent: a) The mapping of into is continuous. b) For every compact subset of , is equicontinuous, and there exists a total set such that for every , the mapping is continuous on .
Moreover, when satisfies these conditions, is a continuous mapping of into equipped with the topology of compact convergence.
To see that a) implies b), we observe that for every neighborhood of 0 in and every , there exist by hypothesis a neighborhood of in and a neighborhood of 0 in such that the relations and imply . It suffices to cover with a finite number of neighborhoods and to take in order to have whenever and , which proves the equicontinuity of .
Conversely, suppose b) is verified; it suffices to show that for every compact subset of , the mapping is continuous on . Let ; since is equicontinuous, it follows that on , the topology of pointwise convergence in is identical to the topology of pointwise convergence in (GT, X, §2, No. 4, Th. 1); the hypothesis b) therefore implies that is a continuous mapping of into when is equipped with the topology of pointwise convergence. On the other hand, is a continuous mapping of into when is equipped with the topology of pointwise convergence (GT, X, §2, No. 1, Cor. 4 of Prop. 1). Since the mapping may be factored as , we conclude that it is continuous.
Finally, the last assertion of the lemma follows from the fact that, on , the topology of compact convergence is identical to that of pointwise convergence (GT, X, §2, No. 4, Th. 1).
Thus, suppose that satisfies the conditions of Lemma 3; then (if is quasi-complete) one defines, as in No. 6, a linear mapping of into . We set .
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
