Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter I, § 4. Nilpotent Lie algebras

Let gg be a Lie algebra and EE the associative subalgebra of L(g)\mathscr{L}(g) generated by 1 and the ad⁡gx\operatorname{ad}_g x (x∈gx \in g). Let RR be the Jacobson radical of EE. (a) The set nn of y∈gy \in g such that ad⁡gy∈R\operatorname{ad}_g y \in R is the largest nilpotent ideal of gg. (b) It is orthogonal to gg under the Killing form.

It should be noted that g/ng/n can have non-zero nilpotent ideals.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
