Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter IV, § 1. Coxeter Groups
Consider a dihedral group of order generated by two distinct elements and of order 2. Denote by (resp. ) the sequence of length whose odd (resp. even) numbered terms are equal to and whose even (resp. odd) numbered terms are equal to , and let (resp. ) be the product of the sequence (resp. ). We have
If is a reduced decomposition (with respect to ) of an element of , then clearly for . Hence, or .
If , the elements and for are distinct. Hence, the elements () and () are distinct, and if is a reduced decomposition of (resp. ) we necessarily have (resp. ). It follows from this that and that the set of reduced decompositions of the elements of consists of the and the . Moreover, every element of has a unique reduced decomposition.
Suppose now that is finite. If , we have and ; if , we have , . Hence, neither nor are reduced decompositions if . It follows that each of the elements of is one of the elements , and for , and . These elements are thus distinct and it follows as above that for and that the set of reduced decompositions of elements of consists of the and the for . Every element of except has a unique reduced decomposition; has two.
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
