Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter IV, Appendix 0. Graphs

Let Γ=(A,S)\Gamma = (A, S) be a graph and (Sα)α∈L(S_\alpha)_{\alpha \in L} its family of connected components. Denote by Γα\Gamma_\alpha the full subgraph of Γ\Gamma having SαS_\alpha as its set of vertices.

(i) For any α\alpha in LL, the graph Γα\Gamma_\alpha is connected. (ii) If Γ′=(A′,S′)\Gamma' = (A', S') is a connected subgraph of Γ\Gamma, there exists α\alpha in LL such that Γ′⊂Γα\Gamma' \subset \Gamma_\alpha. (iii) If α≠β\alpha \neq \beta, no element of SαS_\alpha is joined in Γ\Gamma to any element of SβS_\beta (equivalently, every edge of Γ\Gamma is an edge of one of the Γα\Gamma_\alpha). (iv) Let (Sλ′)λ∈M(S'_\lambda)_{\lambda \in M} be a partition of SS such that, if λ≠μ\lambda \neq \mu, no element of Sλ′S'_\lambda is joined in Γ\Gamma to any element of Sμ′S'_\mu; then each of the sets Sλ′S'_\lambda is a union of connected components of Γ\Gamma.

(i) Let α\alpha be in LL and aa and bb be in SαS_\alpha. Then there exists a path c=(x0,…,xn)c = (x_0, \ldots, x_n) joining aa and bb in Γ\Gamma. For any ii with 0≤i≤n0 \leq i \leq n, the path (x0,…,xi)(x_0, \ldots, x_i) joins aa to xix_i in Γ\Gamma, so xi∈Sαx_i \in S_\alpha. Thus, cc is a path in Γα\Gamma_\alpha joining aa and bb. It follows that Γα\Gamma_\alpha is connected.

(ii) Let Γ′=(A′,S′)\Gamma' = (A', S') be a non-empty connected subgraph of Γ\Gamma, let aa be an element of S′S' and let SαS_\alpha be the connected component of SS containing aa. For any bb in S′S', there exists a path cc joining aa and bb in Γ′\Gamma', and a fortiori in Γ\Gamma. It follows that S′⊂SαS' \subset S_\alpha.

(iii) Given distinct elements α\alpha and β\beta of LL, and vertices a∈Sαa \in S_\alpha and b∈Sβb \in S_\beta, there is no path joining aa and bb, and in particular no edge joining aa and bb.

(iv) Let aa be in Sλ′S'_\lambda and let SαS_\alpha be the connected component of Γ\Gamma containing aa. Then, for any bb in SαS_\alpha, there exists a path (x0,…,xn)(x_0, \ldots, x_n) joining aa and bb in Γ\Gamma. If ii is an integer such that 0≤i<n0 \leq i < n and if xi∈Sλ′x_i \in S'_\lambda, then xi+1∈Sλ′x_{i+1} \in S'_\lambda since xix_i is joined to xi+1x_{i+1}. It follows by induction that xi∈Sλ′x_i \in S'_\lambda for 0≤i≤n0 \leq i \leq n, and in particular that b=xnb = x_n is in Sλ′S'_\lambda. Thus, Sα⊂Sλ′S_\alpha \subset S'_\lambda.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
