Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VI, § 1. Root systems
Every root system R in V is the direct sum of a family of irreducible root systems that is unique up to a bijection of the index set.
The existence of the is proved by induction on Card R: if R is non-empty and not irreducible, R is the direct sum of two root systems such that Card Card , Card Card , and the induction hypothesis applies to and . To prove uniqueness, it suffices to prove that, if is the direct sum of and , every is necessarily contained either in or in . Let be the vector subspaces of generated by . Since the sum is direct, the sum is direct. Since , is the direct sum of the root systems and ; hence either or , which proves the assertion.
The are called the irreducible components of . For any non-zero scalars , the union of the is a root system in , whose inverse system is the union of the , and whose Weyl group is .
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
