Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VI, § 1. Root systems

Let S be an α\alpha-chain of roots, and γ\gamma the origin of S. The length of S is −n(γ,α)-n(\gamma, \alpha); it is equal to 0, 1, 2 or 3.

The first assertion follows from Prop. 9, (iii), applied to β=γ\beta = \gamma, and using the fact that q=0q = 0.

On the other hand, since γ\gamma is not proportional to α\alpha, the list given at the beginning of this no. shows that ∣n(γ,α)∣≤3|n(\gamma, \alpha)| \leq 3, hence the corollary.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
