Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VI, § 1. Root systems

Assume that RR is irreducible and reduced, and that (α∣α)(\alpha|\alpha) takes the values λ\lambda and 2λ2\lambda for α∈R\alpha \in R. Let AA be the set of roots α\alpha such that (α∣α)=λ(\alpha|\alpha) = \lambda. Assume that any two non-proportional elements of AA are orthogonal. Then R1=R∪2AR_1 = R \cup 2A is an irreducible non-reduced root system and RR is the set of indivisible roots of R1R_1.

It is clear that R1R_1 satisfies (RS1_1) and (RSIII_{III}). We show that, if α,β∈R1\alpha, \beta \in R_1, then ⟨α−,β⟩∈Z\langle \alpha^-, \beta \rangle \in \mathbf{Z}. This is clear if α∈R\alpha \in R. Since (2α)−=12α−(2\alpha)^- = \frac{1}{2} \alpha^- for α∈A\alpha \in A, it is also immediate if α,β∈2A\alpha, \beta \in 2A. Finally, assume that β∈R\beta \in R and that α=2γ\alpha = 2\gamma with γ∈A\gamma \in A.

1) If γ=±β\gamma = \pm \beta, then ⟨α−,β⟩=±12⟨γ−,γ⟩=±1\langle \alpha^-, \beta \rangle = \pm \frac{1}{2} \langle \gamma^-, \gamma \rangle = \pm 1. 2) If γ\gamma is not proportional to β\beta and if β∈A\beta \in A, the assumption on AA implies that ⟨γ−,β⟩=0\langle \gamma^-, \beta \rangle = 0, so ⟨α−,β⟩=0\langle \alpha^-, \beta \rangle = 0. 3) If β∈R−A\beta \in R - A, then (β∣β)=2λ=2(γ∣γ)(\beta|\beta) = 2\lambda = 2(\gamma|\gamma), so ⟨β,γ−⟩\langle \beta, \gamma^- \rangle is equal to 0, 2 or -2 by the list in no. 3. Thus ⟨β,α−⟩=12⟨β,γ−⟩∈Z\langle \beta, \alpha^- \rangle = \frac{1}{2} \langle \beta, \gamma^- \rangle \in \mathbf{Z}.

Thus R1R_1 is a root system in VV, and the other assertions are clear.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
