Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VI, § 1. Root systems

Let PP be a subset of R\mathbf{R}.

(i) PP is said to be closed if the conditions α∈P,β∈P,α+β∈R\alpha \in P, \beta \in P, \alpha + \beta \in \mathbf{R} imply α+β∈P\alpha + \beta \in P.

(ii) PP is said to be parabolic if PP is closed and if P∪(−P)=RP \cup (-P) = \mathbf{R}.

(iii) PP is said to be symmetric if P=−PP = -P.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
