Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VI, § 1. Root systems

Let R′R' be the intersection of RR with a vector subspace of VV, so that R′R' is a root system in the vector subspace V′V' that it generates (cf. Cor. of Prop. 4, no. 1). Let B′B' be a basis of R′R'.

(i) There exists a basis of RR containing B′B'. (ii) R′R' is the set of elements of RR that are linear combinations of elements of B′B'.

Assertion (ii) is clear. We prove (i). Let (ε1,ε2,…,εl)(\varepsilon_1, \varepsilon_2, \ldots, \varepsilon_l) be a basis of VV such that B′=(εp+1,εp+2,…,εl)B' = (\varepsilon_{p+1}, \varepsilon_{p+2}, \ldots, \varepsilon_l). The lexicographic order on VV corresponding to this basis defines a chamber CC of RR. It is clear that every element of B′B' is minimal in R+(C)R_+(C). Thus B′⊆B(C)B' \subseteq B(C).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
