Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VI, § 1. Root systems

The set of x∈Vx \in V such that ⟨x,y∗⟩∈Z\langle x, y^* \rangle \in \mathbf{Z} for all y∗∈Q(R∗)y^* \in Q(\mathbf{R}^*) (or, equivalently, for all y∗∈R∗y^* \in \mathbf{R}^*) is a discrete subgroup GG of VV containing Q(R)Q(\mathbf{R}). If B′B' is a basis of R∗\mathbf{R}^*, the basis of VV dual to B′B' is a basis of GG.

Let x∈Vx \in V. The following three properties are equivalent:

(i) ⟨x,y∗⟩∈Z\langle x, y^* \rangle \in \mathbf{Z} for all y∗∈Q(R∗)y^* \in Q(\mathbf{R}^*); (ii) ⟨x,y∗⟩∈Z\langle x, y^* \rangle \in \mathbf{Z} for all y∗∈B′y^* \in B'; (iii) the coordinates of xx with respect to the dual basis of B′B' are in Z\mathbf{Z}.

We deduce from this that the basis dual to B′B' is a basis of GG. On the other hand, (RSIII) proves that R⊆G\mathbf{R} \subseteq G, so Q(R)⊆GQ(\mathbf{R}) \subseteq G.

The group GG of Prop. 26 is denoted by P(R)P(\mathbf{R}), and its elements are called the weights of R\mathbf{R}. We can also consider the group P(R∗)P(\mathbf{R}^*) of weights of R∗\mathbf{R}^*.

P(R)/Q(R),P(R~)/Q(R~) P(R)/Q(R), \quad P(\tilde{R})/Q(\tilde{R})

are finite groups in duality over Q/Z\mathbf{Q}/\mathbf{Z}, and hence are isomorphic. The common order of these two groups is called the connection index of R (or of R~\tilde{R}).

If R is a direct sum of root systems RiR_i, the group Q(R) (resp. P(R)) is identified canonically with the direct sum of the Q(RiR_i) (resp. P(RiR_i)).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
