General Topology, chapter II, § 1. Uniform spaces

A uniform structure (or uniformity) on a set XX is a structure given by a set U\mathfrak{U} of subsets of X×XX \times X which satisfies axioms (F1)(\mathrm{F}_1) and (FII)(\mathrm{F}_{\mathrm{II}}) of Chapter I, § 6, no. 1 and also satisfies the following axioms:

(U₁) Every set belonging to U\mathfrak{U} contains the diagonal Δ\Delta.

(U₂) If V∈UV \in \mathfrak{U} then V‾−1∈U\overline{V}^{-1} \in \mathfrak{U}.

(U₃) For each V∈UV \in \mathfrak{U} there exists W∈UW \in \mathfrak{U} such that W∘W⊂VW \circ W \subset V.

The sets of U\mathfrak{U} are called entourages of the uniformity defined on XX by U\mathfrak{U}. A set endowed with a uniformity is called a uniform space.

If VV is an entourage of a uniformity on XX, we may express the relation (x,x′)∈V(x, x') \in V by saying that "xx and x′x' are VV-close".

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
