General Topology, chapter IX, § 2. Metric spaces and metrizable spaces

In a metrizable space XX, a point xx lies in the closure of a non-empty subset AA of XX if and only if there is a sequence of points of AA which converges to xx.

We know already, from Chapter I, § 7, no. 3, that the condition is sufficient. To see that it is necessary, consider a countable fundamental system (Vn)(V_n) of neighbourhoods of xx such that Vn+1⊂VnV_{n+1} \subset V_n for each nn. If xx lies in the closure of AA then each VnV_n meets AA, and if xnx_n lies in Vn∩AV_n \cap A, the sequence (xn)(x_n) converges to xx(**).

From Proposition 8 we deduce:

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
