General Topology, chapter IX, § 2. Metric spaces and metrizable spaces
Let be a complete metric space, let be an open equivalence relation on such that is Hausdorff, and let be the canonical mapping. Then if is any compact subset of , there is a compact subset of such that .
Let be the set of all open balls of radius in . As runs through , the sets form an open covering of , and therefore there exists a finite number of points of such that the images under of the open balls with radius and centre () form an open covering of . Let and suppose that we have defined a finite set , for , such that:
(i) and each point of is at a distance from , for ;
(ii) the images under of the open balls of radius , with centres at the points of , form an open covering of , for .
Let be the set of all open balls of radius whose centre is such that ( being the metric on ). The properties of show that the sets , for , form an open covering of ; hence there is a finite set such that the images under of the open balls of radius whose centre belongs to form an open covering of . Taking , we see that we can define inductively an infinite sequence of finite subsets of with properties (i) and (ii) above. Let , and let us show that is precompact. For each and each point , there exists a sequence of points () such that
it follows that , and consequently for all , which proves our assertion. Since is complete, is compact, hence is compact. Next, let us show that . If , then by definition for all , and therefore ; but is closed and is compact, so that this implies (no. 2, Remark following Proposition 3); hence the assertion. Thus if , then is closed in and therefore compact, and from what has been proved we have .

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
