General Topology, chapter IX, § 6. Polish spaces, Souslin spaces, Borel sets

*Let X be a set and let L\mathfrak{L} be a set of subsets of X. L\mathfrak{L} is said to be a σ\sigma-algebra on X if the following conditions are satisfied:

a) The complement of every set of L\mathfrak{L} belongs to L\mathfrak{L}.

b) Every countable intersection of sets of L\mathfrak{L} belongs to L\mathfrak{L}.

If L\mathfrak{L} is a σ\sigma-algebra on X, every countable union of sets of L\mathfrak{L} belongs to L\mathfrak{L} (for the complement of this union is an intersection of sets of L\mathfrak{L}).

The set B(X)\mathfrak{B}(X) of all subsets of X is clearly a σ\sigma-algebra. Every intersection of σ\sigma-algebras on X is a σ\sigma-algebra on X. For any subset of B(X)\mathfrak{B}(X), there is therefore a smallest σ\sigma-algebra containing F\mathfrak{F}; it is called the σ\sigma-algebra generated by F\mathfrak{F}.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
