Commutative Algebra, chapter VIII, § 4. Séries de Hilbert-Samuel

Suppose that H0H_0 is a field, and let MM be a finitely generated graded HH-module. Let KK be the field of fractions of HH. Then cMc_M is equal to the rank of the HH-module MM, that is to say to the dimension of the vector space M⊗HKM \otimes_H K over KK.

This is clear if M=HM = H, since cH=1c_H = 1. On the other hand, let x∈Hx \in H be homogeneous of degree dd, and nonzero; one has (H/xH)⊗HK=0(H/xH) \otimes_H K = 0; from the exact sequence

0→H(−d)→H→H/xH→0, 0 \to H(-d) \to H \to H/xH \to 0,
and remarks 2 and 3, one deduces that cH/xH=0c_{H/xH} = 0. The proposition is therefore verified when MM is generated by a homogeneous element. The general case follows from this, since every finitely generated graded HH-module has a composition series whose quotients are of the preceding form.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
