Commutative Algebra, chapter VIII, § 4. Séries de Hilbert-Samuel

Let FF be a qq-good filtration on MM. If M/qMM/qM is of finite length, M/Fn+1M/F_{n+1} and Fn/Fn+1F_n/F_{n+1} are of finite length for every n∈Zn \in \mathbf{Z}. With the notation of (7), we have long⁡(M/Fn+1)≤long⁡(M/qn−n1+1M)\operatorname{long}(M/F_{n+1}) \leq \operatorname{long}(M/q^{n-n_1+1}M) and it is enough to prove that qnM/qn+1Mq^nM/q^{n+1}M is of finite length for every nn. We are thus reduced to the case of the qq-adic filtration. Let (x1,...,xr)(x_1, ..., x_r) be a finite generating system of the AA-module qq, and let II be the finite set of monomials of total degree nn in rr variables

X_1, ..., X_r. The homomorphism from (M/qM)^l into q^nM/q^{n+1}M which maps the family (u_m)_{m\in I} to the element ∑m(x1,...,xr) um\sum m(x_1, ..., x_r)\ u_m is surjective. Since M/qM is of finite length, q^nM/q^{n+1}M is so also.

Henceforth suppose M/qM of finite length. Let F be a q-good filtration on M. There exists n1∈Zn_1 \in \mathbf{Z} such that Fn1=MF_{n_1} = M, hence Fn=MF_n = M for n≤n1n \leq n_1; we therefore define an element HM,FH_{M,F} of Z((T))\mathbf{Z}((T)) by putting

(8)

HM,F=∑n∈Zlong⁡A/q(Fn/Fn+1).Tn∈Z((T)). H_{M,F} = \sum_{n \in \mathbf{Z}} \operatorname{long}_{A/q}(F_n/F_{n+1}). T^n \in \mathbf{Z}((T)).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
