Commutative Algebra, chapter X, § 1. Profondeur

Let AA be a noetherian ring, JJ an ideal of AA and MM a finitely generated AA-module.

a) Suppose that prof⁡A(J;M)\operatorname{prof}_A(J; M) is finite. Then every MM-regular sequence of elements of JJ can be completed to an MM-regular sequence of length prof⁡A(J;M)\operatorname{prof}_A(J; M) of elements of JJ.

b) The depth of MM relative to JJ is the least upper bound of the lengths of MM-regular sequences formed of elements of JJ.

c) For prof⁡A(J;M)\operatorname{prof}_A(J; M) to be finite, it is necessary and sufficient that the support of MM meet V(J)V(J), or again that one have JM≠MJM \neq M.

Let (x1,…,xr)(x_1, \ldots, x_r) be an MM-regular sequence of elements of JJ. One has r⩽prof⁡A(J;M)r \leqslant \operatorname{prof}_A(J; M) (Prop. 7); suppose that the inequality is strict. Let NN denote the AA-module M/(x1M+…+xrM)M/(x_1M + \ldots + x_rM). One has prof⁡A(J;N)>0\operatorname{prof}_A(J; N) > 0 (loc. cit.), so that there exists an element xx of JJ such that the homothety xNx_N is injective (No. 1, Remark 2), that is to say, such that the sequence (x1,…,xr,x)(x_1, \ldots, x_r, x) is MM-regular. It follows by induction that for every integer ss such that r⩽s⩽prof⁡A(J;M)r \leqslant s \leqslant \operatorname{prof}_A(J; M) the sequence (x1,…,xr)(x_1, \ldots, x_r) can be completed to an MM-regular sequence of length ss, which entails assertions a) and b). Assertion c) follows from Remark 1 of No. 1 and Corollary 1 of Theorem 1 of No. 3.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
