Commutative Algebra, chapter X, § 1. Profondeur

Let AA be a noetherian ring, MM and NN two A-modules of finite type, and FF the support of NN. Then profF(M)\mathrm{prof}_F(M) is the greatest lower bound (in N∪{+∞}N \cup \{+\infty\}) of the set of integers nn such that ExtAn(N,M)≠0\mathrm{Ext}_A^n(N, M) \neq 0.

By Remark 1, one has ExtAi(N,M)=0\mathrm{Ext}_A^i(N, M) = 0 for every i<profF(M)i < \mathrm{prof}_F(M). It remains to prove that if profF(M)=n<+∞\mathrm{prof}_F(M) = n < +\infty, one has ExtAn(N,M)≠0\mathrm{Ext}_A^n(N, M) \neq 0. Let JJ be the annihilator of NN; one has F=V(J)F = V(J), hence profF(M)=profA(J;M)\mathrm{prof}_F(M) = \mathrm{prof}_A(J; M). By Cor. 1 of Th. 2 (No. 4), there exists an MM-regular sequence (x1,…,xn)(x_1, \ldots, x_n) of length nn consisting of elements of JJ, and the depth relative to JJ of the A-module M‾=M/(x1M+…+xnM)\overline{M} = M/(x_1 M + \ldots + x_n M) is zero. By A, X, p. 166, Prop. 9, it is enough to prove that HomA(N,M‾)\mathrm{Hom}_A(N, \overline{M}) is nonzero. Now, by Prop. 8, there exists p∈Supp(M)∩Supp(N)p \in \mathrm{Supp}(M) \cap \mathrm{Supp}(N) such that profAp(M‾p)=0\mathrm{prof}_{A_p}(\overline{M}_p) = 0, that is to say HomAp(κ(p),M‾p)≠0\mathrm{Hom}_{A_p}(\kappa(p), \overline{M}_p) \neq 0. Since NpN_p is nonzero, the κ(p)\kappa(p)-vector space Np⊗Apκ(p)N_p \otimes_{A_p} \kappa(p) is nonzero (Nakayama's lemma), and so is its dual; there therefore exists a surjective ApA_p-linear mapping of NpN_p onto κ(p)\kappa(p). It follows that one has HomAp(Np,M‾p)≠0\mathrm{Hom}_{A_p}(N_p, \overline{M}_p) \neq 0, hence HomA(N,M‾)≠0\mathrm{Hom}_A(N, \overline{M}) \neq 0 (II, § 2, No. 7, Prop. 19), which was to be proved.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
