Commutative Algebra, chapter X, § 1. Profondeur

*Let ρ:A→B\rho : A \to B be a homomorphism of noetherian rings making BB into a flat AA-module.

a) If BB is normal and faithfully flat over AA, AA is normal.

b) Suppose that AA is normal and that the ring κ(p)⊗AB\kappa(p) \otimes_A B is normal when pp is a minimal prime ideal of AA, and reduced when pp is a prime ideal of height 1. Then the ring BB is normal.

a) Suppose BB normal and faithfully flat over AA. Then ρ\rho is injective (I, § 3, No. 5, Prop. 9) and BB is reduced, hence AA is reduced. Let SS be the set of non-zero-divisors of AA. Since BB is flat over AA, ρ(S)\rho(S) consists of non-zero-divisors in BB, so that BB is integrally closed in ρ(S)−1B\rho(S)^{-1}B. Let xx be an element of S−1AS^{-1}A integral over AA; then the element x⊗1Bx \otimes 1_B of the ring S−1A⊗ABS^{-1}A \otimes_A B (which is identified with ρ(S)−1B\rho(S)^{-1}B) is integral over BB, hence belong to BB. Since BB is faithfully flat over AA, one has x∈Ax \in A (I, § 3, No. 5, Prop. 10, (ii)), and AA is normal.

b) Under the hypotheses of b), it is enough, by Remark 1, to prove that for every prime ideal qq of BB, the local ring BqB_q is normal or of depth ⩾2\geqslant 2. Let pp denote the prime ideal ρ−1(q)\rho^{-1}(q) of AA; the local homomorphism Ap→BqA_p \to B_q deduced from ρ\rho makes BqB_q into a faithfully flat ApA_p-module (I, § 3, No. 5, Prop. 9). Let us distinguish four cases :

1) ht(p)=0\mathrm{ht}(p) = 0. Then ApA_p is a field, equal to κ(p)\kappa(p); the ring Ap⊗ABA_p \otimes_A B is normal by assumption. The same is true of BqB_q, which is a ring of fractions thereof.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
