For the a-module E to be injective, it is necessary and sufficient that, for every injective a-linear mapping u:M′→M, the mapping
HomA(u,1):HomA(M,E)→HomA(M′,E)
be surjective.
If E is injective and if u:M′→M is injective, then the sequence 0→M′uM is exact, and hence so is the sequence Hom(M,E)Hom(u,1)Hom(M′,E)→0, and Hom(u,1) is surjective. Conversely, consider the exact sequence (19); put M1′′=ν(M) and let i:M1′′→M′′ be the canonical injection and p:M→M1′′ the mapping m↦ν(m). The sequence M′uMpM1′′→0 is exact; by II, p. 36, th. 1, the sequence
is exact. Moreover, one has Hom(ν,1)=Hom(p,1)∘Hom(i,1). If E satisfies the condition of the lemma, Hom(i,1) is surjective, hence the image of Hom(ν,1) is also that of Hom(p,1), and the sequence (20) is exact.
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
