Algebra, chapter X, § 2. Complexes de A-modules

Let EE be a complex, h:E→Ch : E \to C and h′:E→C′h' : E \to C' be homotopy equivalences with CC and C′C' bounded of type C\mathscr{C}. Then χ(C)=χ(C′)\chi(C) = \chi(C'). Indeed, if h1h_1 is an inverse of hh up to homotopy, h′∘h1h' \circ h_1 is a homotopy equivalence, hence a homology isomorphism from CC to C′C', and one can apply Prop. 10. Consequently, one can extend Definition 8 by setting χ(E)=χ(C)\chi(E) = \chi(C) whenever there exists a homotopy equivalence from EE to a complex CC bounded of type C\mathscr{C}. Propositions 10, 11, 12 and their corollaries generalise in this setting.

Application:

\* Let X be a topological space admitting a finite cellular decomposition (cf. No. 3). a) Let K and K' be two fields, put bi=dim⁡K(Hi(X,K))b_i = \dim_K(H_i(X, K)) and bi′=dim⁡K′(Hi(X,K′))b'_i = \dim_{K'}(H_i(X, K')). It is not necessarily the case that bi=bi′b_i = b'_i, but one has Σ(−1)ibi=Σ(−1)ibi′\Sigma (-1)^i b_i = \Sigma (-1)^i b'_i. b) Let (Xn)(X_n) and (Xn′)(X'_n) be two finite cellular decompositions of X, and denote by cnc_n and cn′c'_n the number of cells of dimension n in these two decompositions. One has

Σ(−1)ici=Σ(−1)ici′. \Sigma (-1)^i c_i = \Sigma (-1)^i c'_i .
c) With the notations of a) and b), one has Σ(−1)ici=Σ(−−1)ibi\Sigma (-1)^i c_i = \Sigma (--1)^i b_i. The properties a) and b) result from c), and c) results from prop. 11 applied to the complex Γ\Gamma described in No. 3, taking for C\mathscr{C} the class of finite-dimensional K-vector spaces and for φ\varphi the function defined by φ([M])=dim⁡K(M)\varphi([M]) = \dim_K(M) (X, p. 40, example 1).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
