Algebra, chapter X, § 5. Modules d’extensions

*Let C,C~,C′,C~′C, \tilde{C}, C', \tilde{C}' be four AA-complexes, u:C~→C,v:C~→C,u′:C′→C~′u : \tilde{C} \to C, v : \tilde{C} \to C, u' : C' \to \tilde{C}' and v′:C′→C~′v' : C' \to \tilde{C}' four morphisms of complexes.

a) If uu and u′u' are homotopic to vv and v′v' respectively, then the two morphisms HomgrA(u,u′)\mathrm{Homgr}_A(u, u') and HomgrA(v,v′)\mathrm{Homgr}_A(v, v') from HomgrA(C,C′)\mathrm{Homgr}_A(C, C') to HomgrA(C~,C~′)\mathrm{Homgr}_A(\tilde{C}, \tilde{C}') are homotopic.

b) If uu and u′u' are homotopisms, HomgrA(u,u′)\mathrm{Homgr}_A(u, u') is a homotopism.

c) If CC or C′C' is homotopic to zero, HomgrA(C,C′)\mathrm{Homgr}_A(C, C') is homotopic to zero.*

Let us denote by the same letter dd the differentials of the complexes CC, C1C_1, C′C', C1′C'_1, and by DD the differentials of HomgrA(C,C′)\mathrm{Homgr}_A(C,C') and HomgrA(C1,C1′)\mathrm{Homgr}_A(C_1,C'_1). If uu (resp. u′u') is homotopic to vv (resp. v′v'), there exists a graded homomorphism of degree 11,

w:C1→C(resp. w′:C′→C1′) w:C_1\to C\qquad\text{(resp. }w':C'\to C'_1\text{)}

such that

u−v=dw+wd(resp. u′−v′=dw′+w′d)(2) \tag{2} u-v=dw+wd\qquad\text{(resp. }u'-v'=dw'+w'd\text{)}

Let W:HomgrA(C,C′)→HomgrA(C1,C1′)W:\mathrm{Homgr}_A(C,C')\to\mathrm{Homgr}_A(C_1,C'_1) be the graded homomorphism of degree 11 such that, for f∈HomgrA(C,C′)nf\in\mathrm{Homgr}_A(C,C')_n, n∈Zn\in\mathbf{Z}, one has

W(f)=w′fu+(−1)nv′fw.(3) \tag{3} W(f)=w'fu+(-1)^n v'fw.

We then have

(DW+WD)(f)=D[w′fu+(−1)nv′fw]+W[df−(−1)nfd] (DW+WD)(f)=D[w'fu+(-1)^n v'fw]+W[df-(-1)^nfd]
=dw′fu−(−1)n+1w′fud+(−1)ndv′fw+v′fwd =dw'fu-(-1)^{n+1}w'fud+(-1)^ndv'fw+v'fwd
+w′dfu+(−1)n+1v′dfw−(−1)nw′fdu+v′fdw \qquad+w'dfu+(-1)^{n+1}v'dfw-(-1)^nw'fdu+v'fdw
=(dw′+w′d)fu+v′f(wd+dw) =(dw'+w'd)fu+v'f(wd+dw)
=(u′−v′)fu+v′f(u−v)=u′fu−v′fv; =(u'-v')fu+v'f(u-v)=u'fu-v'fv;

This is written as DW+WD=HomgrA(u,u′)−HomgrA(v,v′)DW+WD=\mathrm{Homgr}_A(u,u')-\mathrm{Homgr}_A(v,v'), whence a).

Let us prove b). If uu and u′u' are homotopy equivalences, let α:C→C~\alpha:C\to\widetilde C and α′:C~′→C′\alpha':\widetilde C'\to C' be morphisms of complexes such that u∘αu\circ\alpha, α∘u\alpha\circ u, u′∘α′u'\circ\alpha', α′∘u′\alpha'\circ u' are homotopic respectively to IdC\mathrm{Id}_C, IdC~\mathrm{Id}_{\widetilde C}, IdC~′\mathrm{Id}_{\widetilde C'}, IdC′\mathrm{Id}_{C'}. Then Homgr(u,u′)∘Homgr(α,α′)\mathrm{Homgr}(u,u')\circ\mathrm{Homgr}(\alpha,\alpha'), which is equal to Homgr(α∘u,u′∘α′)\mathrm{Homgr}(\alpha\circ u,u'\circ\alpha'), is homotopic by a) to

HomgrA(IdC,IdC′)=IdHomgrA(C,C′); \mathrm{Homgr}_A(\mathrm{Id}_C,\mathrm{Id}_{C'})=\mathrm{Id}_{\mathrm{Homgr}_A(C,C')};

analogously Homgr(α,α′)∘Homgr(u,u′)\mathrm{Homgr}(\alpha,\alpha')\circ\mathrm{Homgr}(u,u') is homotopic to IdHomgr(C~,C~′)\mathrm{Id}_{\mathrm{Homgr}(\widetilde C,\widetilde C')}, whence b).

Finally c) follows from b) (applied to the case where C~\widetilde C or C~′\widetilde C' is zero).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
