Algebra, chapter X, § 5. Modules d’extensions

Let NN be an AA-module. The following conditions are equivalent:

(i) NN is injective. (ii) Ext⁡Ai(M,N)=0\operatorname{Ext}_A^i(M, N) = 0 for every AA-module MM and every integer i>0i > 0.

(iii) ExtA1(M,N)=0\mathrm{Ext}_A^1(M, N) = 0 for every AA-module MM.

(iv) There exists an exact sequence

0→N→uI→vC→0, 0 \to N \xrightarrow{u} I \xrightarrow{v} C \to 0,

where II is injective and where ExtA1(C,N)=0\mathrm{Ext}_A^1(C, N) = 0;

(v) ExtA1(M,N)=0\mathrm{Ext}_A^1(M, N) = 0 for every cyclic AA-module MM.

(i) ⇒\Rightarrow (ii) : this is the corollary of Prop. 5 of X, p. 88.

(ii) ⇒\Rightarrow (iii) ⇒\Rightarrow (v) : this is trivial.

(iii) ⇒\Rightarrow (iv) : this is clear since NN is a submodule of an injective module (X, p. 19, Cor. 3).

(iv) ⇒\Rightarrow (i) : since ExtA1(C,N)=0\mathrm{Ext}_A^1(C, N) = 0, the canonical homomorphism

HomA(I,N)→HomA(N,N) \mathrm{Hom}_A(I, N) \to \mathrm{Hom}_A(N, N)

is surjective (X, p. 93, Corollary); there therefore exists an AA-linear retraction of uu and NN is isomorphic to a direct factor of II, hence is injective (X, p. 16, Prop. 9).

(v) ⇒\Rightarrow (i) : if α\alpha is an ideal of AA, we have ExtA1(A/α,N)=0\mathrm{Ext}_A^1(A/\alpha, N) = 0; the canonical mapping HomA(A,N)→HomA(α,N)\mathrm{Hom}_A(A, N) \to \mathrm{Hom}_A(\alpha, N) is therefore surjective and NN is injective (X, p. 16, Prop. 10).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
