Algebra, chapter X, § 8. Dimension homologique

Let MM be an AA-module. The projective dimension of MM, denoted by dpA(M)\mathrm{dp}_A(M), is the greatest lower bound in Z‾\overline{\mathbf{Z}} of the lengths of projective resolutions of MM (X, p. 48).

We thus have dpA(0)=−∞\mathrm{dp}_A(0) = -\infty, dpA(M)≥0\mathrm{dp}_A(M) \geq 0 if M≠0M \neq 0. For MM to be projective, it is necessary and sufficient that dpA(M)≤0\mathrm{dp}_A(M) \leq 0.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
