Integration, chapter VII, § 1. Construction d'une mesure de Haar

Prenons K=RK = \mathbf{R}, et pour AA le corps des quaternions H\mathbf{H} (Top. Gén., chap. VIII, 3e éd., § 1, n° 4). Considérons les éléments suivants de M2(C)\mathbf{M}_2(\mathbf{C}):

X1=(0ii0)X2=(0−110)X3=(i00−i) X_1 = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & i \\ i & 0 \end{pmatrix} \quad X_2 = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & -1 \\ 1 & 0 \end{pmatrix} \quad X_3 = \begin{pmatrix} i & 0 \\ 0 & -i \end{pmatrix}

qui, avec I2I_2, forment une base de M2(C)\mathbf{M}_2(\mathbf{C}) sur C\mathbf{C}. On vérifie aisément que

X12=X22=X32=−I2,X1X2=−X2X1=X3, X_1^2 = X_2^2 = X_3^2 = -I_2, \quad X_1 X_2 = -X_2 X_1 = X_3,
X2X3=−X3X2=X1,X3X1=−X1X3=X2. X_2 X_3 = -X_3 X_2 = X_1, \quad X_3 X_1 = -X_1 X_3 = X_2.

Donc l'application a+bi+cj+dk→aI2+bX1+cX2+dX3a + b i + c j + d k \to a I_2 + b X_1 + c X_2 + d X_3 se prolonge en un C\mathbf{C}-isomorphisme de l'algèbre C⊗RH\mathbf{C} \otimes_\mathbf{R} \mathbf{H} sur l'algèbre M2(C)\mathbf{M}_2(\mathbf{C}). Comme [H:R]=4[\mathbf{H} : \mathbf{R}] = 4, C\mathbf{C} est un corps neutralisant de H\mathbf{H}, et la norme réduite de q=a+bi+cj+dk∈Hq = a + b i + c j + d k \in \mathbf{H} est

Nrd(q)=det⁡(aI2+bX1+cX2+dX3) \mathrm{Nrd}(q) = \det(a I_2 + b X_1 + c X_2 + d X_3)
=det⁡(a+id−c+ibc+iba−id)=a2+b2+c2+d2=∥q∥2. = \det \begin{pmatrix} a + id & -c + ib \\ c + ib & a - id \end{pmatrix} = a^2 + b^2 + c^2 + d^2 = \|q\|^2.

D'après Alg., chap. VIII, § 12, n° 3, prop. 8, on a

NH/R(q)=(NrdH/R(q))2=∥q∥4. N_{\mathbf{H}/\mathbf{R}}(q) = (\mathrm{Nrd}_{\mathbf{H}/\mathbf{R}}(q))^2 = \|q\|^4.

Ceci posé, la prop. 17 montre que

modH(q)=∥q∥4. \mathrm{mod}_\mathbf{H}(q) = \|q\|^4.

Une étude plus approfondie de la structure des corps localement compacts sera faite en Alg. comm., chap. VI, § 9.

Bourbaki place la démonstration juste après l’énoncé : ce qui précède est l’énoncé avec sa démonstration.
