Let $A$ be a reduced noetherian semi-local ring, $R$ its total ring of fractions, $\hat{A}$ the completion of $A$. In order that $\hat{A}$ be reduced, it is necessary and sufficient that $R \otimes_A \hat{A}$ be reduced.
