Commutative Algebra, VIII, p. 88
Place ourselves in the situation of Theorem 1 of § 4, No. 2, and denote by C the set of classes of finite type graded H-modules with components of finite length over H0, and by K(C) the corresponding grothendieck group. a) For every H-module M as above, now prove that there exists a finite length graded H0-module M0 and a surjective graded homomorphism p:H⊗H0M0→M. Deduce that every H-module M as above admits a graded resolution (A, X, p. 56) by H-modules:
...→H⊗H0M1→H⊗H0M0→M→0
where, for every i, Mi is a finite length graded H0-module. b) Using a Koszul resolution of the H-module H0 (A, X, p. 152), now prove that for every graded H-module M, TorjH(H0,M) is endowed canonically with a graduation, that TorjH(H0,M)=0 for j>Card(I) and that TorjH(H0,P⊗H0H) is a finite length H0-module for every j when P is a finite length H0-module.
c) Show that for every j, TorjH(H0,M) is a graded H0-module of finite length when M is of type C. (It may be shown by increasing induction on j. If j=0, use a) and b). In the general case, use an exact sequence 0→N→H⊗H0M0→M→0, the induction hypothesis and b).) d) For every H-module M of type C, put
e(M)=p∈Z∑j=0∑∞(−1)j[TorjH(H0,M)p]Tp, thus obtaining an element of
K(C0)[T,T−1] where
K(C0) is the grothendieck group of
H0-modules of finite length. Show that
M↦e(M) is additive on exact sequences of graded
H-modules, and that consequently
M↦e(M) determines a group homomorphism
e:K(C)→K(C0)[T,T−1]. For every graded
H0-module
P of finite length, put
τ(P)=[H⊗H0P]∈K(C). Show that
P↦τ(P) is additive on exact sequences and that consequently
P↦τ(P) determines a homomorphism between the corresponding grothendieck groups
τ:K(C0)[T,T−1]→K(C). Show that
e and
τ are inverse group isomorphisms. (First show that
e∘τ is the identity. To prove the assertion, it is therefore enough to show that
τ is surjective, that is to show that for every
H-module
M of type
C,
[M] belongs to the image of
τ. Notice that
M admits a finite filtration whose successive quotients are annihilated by a maximal ideal of
H0 and that an
H-module
M of type
C, annihilated by a maximal ideal
m of
H0, admits a finite graded resolution by free
H/mH-modules of finite type (A, X, p. 56).) e) Let
M be an
H-module of type
C. Show that one has in
K(C) [M]=i≥0∑(−1)i[H⊗H0ToriH(H0,M)]. f) Let
Γ be a commutative group and
Φ:K(C)→Γ a group homomorphism. For every
H0-module of finite length
P, put
ψ(P)=Φ([H⊗H0P]). Show that for every
H-module
M of type
C, one has
Φ([M])=j≥0∑(−1)jψ(TorjH(H0,M)). In particular, with the notation of Remark 4 of § 4, No. 2 show that one has
QM=j=0∑r(−1)jPTj, and consequently that
cM=j=0∑r(−1)jlongH0(TorjH(H0,M)). g) Give, using the preceding results, a new proof of Theorem 1 of § 4, No. 1. h) Let
Γ be a commutative group. Describe all additive mappings
M↦Φ(M) on the
H-modules of type
C with values in
Γ, in terms of mappings from
Specmax(H0)×Z into
Γ. i) Suppose that
H0 is a field. Let
A be a ring. Describe all additive mappings
M↦C(M) with values in
A such that
C(M).C(N)=∑j(−1)jC(TorjH(M,N)) for every pair
M and
N of graded
H-modules of finite type.
