Exercise 23, § 5
Commutative Algebra, VIII, p. 97
Let be a field of characteristic exponent , a finitely generated -algebra, a prime ideal of . Now prove that the following conditions are equivalent: (i) the ring is regular for every extension of ; (ii) the ring is regular; (iii) the ring is regular for every finite and purely inseparable extension of . (To exercise prove (ii) (iii), use Exercise 14, a), p. 96. To exercise prove (iii) (i), it is enough to show that is regular when is a finitely generated extension of (Exercise 21), purely inseparable extension of a purely transcendental extension (Exercises 22 and 14, a), and domination of the extension by a finite quasi-Galois extension of a purely transcendental extension). Now dominate by an extension where is a finite and purely inseparable extension of and reduce to the case by Exercise 14, a). On putting , a regular algebra by (iii), we have , a regular algebra by Exercise 6, e), p. 94.) We say that is smooth if it has the equivalent properties above.
