Let A be a noetherian local ring, with maximal ideal m. (a) Suppose that grm(A) is a graded ring which is a complete intersection (cf. exerc. 3). Now prove that the completion A^ of A is a complete intersection, that is to say the quotient of a regular local ring by an ideal generated by a complete intersection sequence. (b) Let x∈m, and let ξ be the image of x in mv/mv+1, where v is such that x∈mv and x∈/mv+1. Now prove that one has em(A/x.A)=v.em(A) if and only if ξ is not a zero divisor in grm(A), and that in this case one has grm(A/x.A)=grm(A)/ξ.grm(A) and x is not a zero divisor in A. (Let I be the homogeneous ideal of grm(A) formed by the elements η∈grm(A) such that ξ.η=0. Consider the ideal Nn=mv+n:x of A and the mapping from In into Nn+1/mn+1 which to η∈In associates the class mod. mn+1 of an element y∈A lifting η. We shall prove that it is injective, and one will deduce from it the inequality
(i)
longA/m(In)≤longA/m(Nn+1/mn+1);
moreover, one will prove the equality
(ii)
(1−Tν)HA(1)=T−νHA/xA(1)−n≥ν∑longA/m(Nn/mn).Tn.
One will finally remark that ξ is a zero divisor if and only if I={0}, and using the preceding exercise, one will deduce from (i) that one has ∑n≥0longA/m(Nn+1/mn+1).Tn=(1−T)νS(T) with S(1)=0, and from (ii) the inequality em(A/xA)>em(A).
(c) Let (x1,...,xs) be a sequence of elements of the maximal ideal m. Suppose that one has xi∈mνi and xi∈/mνi+1, and let ξi be the class of xi in mνi/mνi+1. Now prove that one has em(A/x)≥em(A).ν1...νs and that equality holds if and only if the sequence (ξ1,...,ξs) is a complete intersection sequence in the ring grm(A). In this case one has an isomorphism of graded rings of grm(A/x) with (grm(A))/ξ with x=∑ixiA,ξ=∑iξigrm(A).
