Exercise 5, § 3

Commutative Algebra, X, p. 158

a) Let kk be a field, RR a kk-algebra of finite degree. In order that RR be a Gorenstein ring, it is necessary and sufficient that the RR-module Homk(R,k)\mathrm{Hom}_k(R, k) be free of rank 1 (reduce to the case where RR is local, and observe that the RR-module Homk(R,k)\mathrm{Hom}_k(R, k) is injective and contains a submodule isomorphic to κR\kappa_R; for another proof, cf. § 8, No. 6, cor. of the prop. 5). b) Suppose that the above conditions are satisfied, and that in addition the algebra RR is graded of type NN, with R0=kR_0 = k. Let ss be the largest integer such that Rs≠0R_s \neq 0. Prove that RsR_s has dimension 1 over kk, and is equal to the socle of RR; for every nonzero kk-linear form ℓ\ell on RsR_s, the kk-bilinear form (x,y)↦ℓ(xy)(x, y) \mapsto \ell(xy) on Ri×Rs−iR_i \times R_{s-i} induces for every ii an isomorphism of RiR_i onto Homk(Rs−i,k)\mathrm{Hom}_k(R_{s-i}, k). c) Let AA be a noetherian ring, BB an AA-algebra which is a flat module of finite type. Prove that the following conditions are equivalent: (i) the BB-module HomA(B,A)\mathrm{Hom}_A(B, A) is projective of rank 1 ; (ii) for every maximal (resp. prime) ideal pp of AA, the ring κ(p)⊗AB\kappa(p) \otimes_A B is a Gorenstein ring.

EXERCISES

These conditions are satisfied in particular when B is a Gorenstein ring.
