Let A be a ring, n an integer, S the algebra A[X1,…,Xn] (resp. A[[X1,…,Xn]]), a an ideal of S generated by a sequence P=(P1,…,Pn) completely transversal for S. Put B=S/a, and denote by π the canonical homomorphism of S onto S/a. Suppose that the A-module B is free of finite type. We propose to prove that the B-module B∗ is free of rank 1 and that the different ideal of B over A is generated by π(det(∂Xj∂Pi)). (a) Put C=S⊗AB and ξi=Xi⊗1−1⊗π(Xi) for 1≤i≤n. Denote by φ:C→B the homomorphism of A-algebras such that φ(P⊗b)=π(P)b. Prove that the kernel of φ is generated by the sequence ξ=(ξ1,…,ξn), and that this sequence is completely transversal for C. (b) Let (cij)∈Mn(C) be a matrix satisfying Pi⊗1=∑jcijξj. Prove the equality π(∂Xj∂Pi)=φ(cij). (c) The matrix (cij) defines a morphism of complexes K∙(P,C)→K∙(ξ,C) (A, X, p. 151), whence a morphism of complexes of S-modules u:K∙(P,S)→K∙(ξ,C). The homomorphism un:S→C maps 1S onto the element d=det(cij) of C. (d) Let v:HomS(C,S)⊗CB→B be the B-linear homomorphism such that v(f⊗1)=π(f(d)); prove that v is an isomorphism (identify v with Hn(HomS(u,1S))), and observe that each of the complexes K∙(P,S) and K∙(ξ,C) defines a resolution of B by free S-modules of finite type. (e) Consider the composite mapping t:HomA(B,A)→HomS(C,S)→B, where the first arrow is obtained by extension of scalars and the second is deduced from v. Prove that t is B-linear and bijective (identify HomS(C,S) with HomA(B,A)⊗BC). (f) Prove the formula t(TrB/A)=φ(d) (express d and TrB/A using a basis of B and the dual basis of B∗, cf. exerc. 7, a)).
g) Deduce from b), e) and f) that the different ideal of B over A is generated by π(det(∂Xj∂Pi)).
